Nigeria’s one-run finish seals a perfect Abuja campaign as Uganda also advance

Nigeria completed a five-win campaign in Abuja with a dramatic one-run victory over Uganda, while both teams secured places in the 2027 Africa Regional Final on the route to the 2028 men’s T20 World Cup.
The ICC’s 26 October report says the two sides had already qualified before their final meeting. Nigeria’s victory settled first place at the sub-regional event; it did not qualify either country directly for the World Cup itself.
A final ball with more than one complication
Nigeria made 148, with Isaac Danladi contributing 47. Uganda’s Riazat Ali Shah answered with 60 from 35 balls, leaving his side needing six from the final over. After three singles from five deliveries, Uganda required three to win from the last ball.
An injury prevented Vincent Adewoye from completing the over, leaving Sylvester Okpe to deliver the decisive ball. Juma Miyagi was run out attempting a second run, and Nigeria held on. Uganda finished the tournament with four wins.
The ending shows how a small target can remain difficult when every action has consequences. The batting side must judge the delivery, the available run and the risk of a return throw. The fielding side must stay organised even when a late change disrupts its bowling plan.
Qualification has several stages
Nigeria and Uganda join Tanzania, Ghana, Rwanda and Kenya in the six-team regional line-up. The next stage is therefore a fresh competition, not a ceremonial continuation of the Abuja result. A perfect sub-regional record is valuable evidence of form, but it does not carry a team automatically through the remaining qualification process.
That distinction matters for supporters reading a World Cup headline. The route to a global tournament often contains several named stages, and advancing from one of them is an achievement in its own right. Describing it accurately gives the teams credit without promising an outcome that has not yet been earned.
The performance behind the finish
A last-ball incident can dominate the memory of a tournament, but five wins require more than one moment of composure. Preparation across matches, recovery between games and the ability to respond to different opponents all contribute to a campaign.
For Uganda, the narrow defeat should likewise be considered alongside the qualification already secured. The final result separated the teams on the day, while their broader records established both as successful entrants from the event. Those are compatible conclusions rather than competing interpretations.
The next useful questions concern the regional final’s confirmed arrangements and the cricket required to progress from it. Until those matches are played, the accurate story is a strong Nigerian home campaign, an exceptionally close finish and a further opportunity for both countries. Abuja supplied a memorable conclusion to one stage of the journey, with the larger task still ahead.
