Abu Dhabi gran fondo joins the UCI series with a December amateur-racing date

The AD Ports Group Gran Fondo Abu Dhabi will join the UCI Gran Fondo World Series on 20 December 2026, adding a new qualifying opportunity for amateur cyclists. The series announced the development on 22 October.

The 154-kilometre route links Al Ain’s Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium with the Sheikh Zayed Festival in Al Wathba. The organiser describes a predominantly flat course and says the event will use roads planned for Abu Dhabi’s 2028 Gran Fondo World Championships.

An established event gains a different role

The race, previously known as the Bike Abu Dhabi Gran Fondo, is entering its fifth edition. Joining the series changes its connection to the wider amateur championship structure, rather than creating an elite professional road race under a similar name.

That distinction matters for prospective participants. Amateur championship qualification has its own eligibility and category rules. A rider should check the official event and series regulations rather than assume that entering automatically secures a championship place.

A flat course still demands planning

A route without major climbing can appear straightforward on a profile, but distance alone creates a sustained task. Riders need to understand the event’s arrangements, the route and the rules under which the competition takes place.

Group positioning and the ability to maintain a consistent effort can shape a road event even when the elevation changes are modest. The fastest route through a race is not always explained by who can produce the highest short burst of speed.

For anyone considering participation, practical information from the organiser is more useful than a broad claim that a course is easy. Registration conditions, support arrangements and the confirmed route need to be read before making plans.

Looking towards 2028

The organiser’s connection between the December event and the future championship offers an early view of the setting. It should not be read as a guarantee that every operational detail will remain unchanged over the next two years.

For African amateur riders following international opportunities, the announcement is a useful addition to the calendar. The appropriate next step is to check eligibility and the precise qualification conditions through the series’ official information, rather than rely on an abbreviated promotional summary.

The sporting development is clear: an established Abu Dhabi event is joining a recognised international amateur series. The December race offers both a competition in its own right and a link to a future championship. What it means for an individual rider will depend on the published rules and the performance delivered on the day.
