A freight train stretching 7.6 kilometres is the subject of this Africanews Short from South Africa. State logistics company Transnet says the test involved 696 empty wagons travelling between the country’s west coast and an inland mining area.

The important context is that this was a test journey. The source describes a learning exercise intended to improve the movement of minerals and other goods. A successful test does not mean the same configuration has become a routine, fully loaded commercial service.

Transnet’s description of the train as the longest is a company claim, rather than an independent record certification presented by Montage Africa. Watch the footage for the scale of the operation, and follow the source report for the company’s explanation of the trial.
