In what is fast becoming a World Amala Day Celebration, AmalaHangOutWithTolu has sparked a powerful cultural celebration in Hull as the third edition of the food and community event lit up Humber All Nations Alliance on September 6, 2025.
Branded the Amala and Akara Edition, the gathering attracted Nigerians in the UK eager to savour a taste of home.
Guests enjoyed steaming bowls of Amala, paired with Gbegiri and Ewedu, alongside vibrant games, Yoruba nursery rhymes, and traditional tales that rekindled the spirit of shared heritage.
The entertainment segment featured Masoyinbo games, tales by moonlight stories, oonka Yoruba and nursery rhymes in Yoruba, drawing cheers and laughter from the audience.
These activities underscored the event’s mission of keeping culture alive for Nigerians in the diaspora.
Founder Toolz explained that the hangout began as a small circle of friends but has now grown into a vibrant platform for cultural expression.
“I realised I didn’t just want to serve food, I wanted to serve a piece of home, a taste of nostalgia, and a reminder of our roots,” she said.
Olasunkanmi added that the long-term dream is to transform AmalaHangOutWithTolu into a full African food festival in the UK.
“Every time I think about this, and how huge and almost impossible it seems, I’m reminded of a big God who is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above all that we can ask or imagine. Won’t He do it?” she said passionately.
From its humble start with 19 friends and a “Rich Aunty Vibes” theme, the event has evolved into a unifying force for Nigerians abroad.
To add fun and competition, prizes were awarded during the Hull edition.
The best dressed guest walked away with a £10 voucher, while the overall best table and the most interactive group each secured a pack of noodles. These rewards added an extra layer of excitement to the celebration.
The Hull edition was powered by support from Agbeke Artistry, FSA Events & Decor and Iretura, a Nigerian print and media agency. And in partnership also with Yoruba Lede, Ayinkeakewi_uk, Star Cuisine, and Thespoonhand.
AmalaHangOutWithTolu is more than just an event. It has become a cultural movement that blends food, heritage, and fellowship, reinforcing the bonds of community while pointing towards a bigger African food festival dream in the UK.
