By Rédaction Africanews and Agencies A commercial flight has landed at Khartoum airport for only the second time since Sudan’s civil war broke out almost three years ago. The domestic flight operated by the national flag carrier SUDANAIR took off on Sunday morning from the Red Sea city of Port Sudan. The reopening of the airport is a crucial step in the government’s efforts to normalise life in the capital. “I have mixed feelings of joy and immense happiness because the airport is open, and with that, the country and the capital are back,” said Musab Suwar Al-Dhahab, a Sudanese…
By Dominic Wabwireh with AP In the forests of Ethiopia’s largest region, a shadow war grinds on. Hunted by government drones, Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) commander Jaal Marroo denies his fighters target civilians. Yet, as a hidden humanitarian crisis deepens, international investigators accuse both sides of atrocities, leaving millions trapped in a deadly stalemate. The government brands the OLA as terrorists, accusing them of ethnically motivated massacres. Rebel leader Marroo, in a rare interview, insists his troops operate under “strict military discipline.” However, UN investigators and rights groups like Amnesty International document a brutal reciprocity: the OLA accused of killings…
By Rédaction Africanews and AP The so-called Islamic State released new video on Sunday said to show its attack on an air force base in Niger’s capital Niamey. The footage was aired by the Amaq News Agency, part of the jihadist group’s propaganda wing. Four soldiers were injured and several aircraft damaged in Thursday’s assault on the international airport. The video purports to show an explosion inside a hangar housing a helicopter and another aircraft on fire. Gunfire also damaged several passenger planes. South Africa’s Zulu king has raised eyebrows by using a highly derogatory term for foreigners and saying they must all leave the country during a much-hyped speech that was supposed to have been aimed at calming anti-migrant feelings in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal. Misuzulu kaZwelithini was addressing his supporters at the place where 20,000 Zulus warriors defeated a British contingent of 1,800 soldiers 147 years ago beneath the rocky outcrop of Isandlwana hill. The Battle of Isandlwana, fought during the Anglo-Zulu war, is something many Zulus wear like a badge of honour: they fought against a foreign army and…
A Kenyan family is seeking answers and support to repatriate the body of their 29-year-old relative, who was killed in Ukraine while fighting for Russia. Clinton Nyapara Mogesa, 29, initially left Kenya for a job in Qatar in 2024, and his family later learned that he had then travelled to Russia. On Saturday, Ukrainian authorities reported that he had died in a so-called “meat assault” – one involving high casualty numbers – in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, after being recruited in Qatar. They said the Russians did not evacuate his body, and he was carrying the passports of two other Kenyans.…
Sustained heavy gunfire and loud explosions have been heard in Niger near the international airport outside the capital, Niamey. Multiple eyewitness accounts and videos showed air defence systems apparently engaging unidentified projectiles in the early hours of Thursday. The situation later calmed down, reports say, with an official reportedly saying the situation was now under control, without elaborating. It is not clear what caused the blasts, or if there were any casualties. There has been no official statement from the military government. The gunfire and blasts began shortly after midnight, according to residents of a neighbourhood near the Diori Hamani…
Passenger flights between Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, and cities in the northern Tigray region have been cancelled amid fears of a return to conflict, with reports of clashes in one area. Ethiopia Airlines, which operates all routes in the country, sent passengers a text message about the cancellations citing “unplanned circumstances”. Neither the airline nor the government has commented further. Airport staff in Tigray’s main city of Mekelle have reportedly been told not to go to work. A 2022 peace deal to end a brutal civil war in Tigray has been unravelling as tensions grow over disputed territory and ahead…
By Rédaction Africanews A court in Uganda has granted bail to Sarah Bireete, a leading human rights activist detained ahead of the country’s general election. Bireete, head of the Kampala-based Centre for Constitutional Governance (CCG), was arrested on December 30 after questioning the accuracy of the voter register. Authorities later charged her with offences linked to the alleged unlawful disclosure of voter information. On Wednesday, Magistrate Winnie Nankya Jatiko ordered her release, saying she had met all the conditions required for bail. Her arrest drew criticism from rights groups, who said it was part of a broader crackdown on dissent…
By Rédaction Africanews and Agencies Rwanda has filed an arbitration case against the United Kingdom saying it’s owed more than 130 million dollars as part of a cancelled asylum scheme. In a submission to the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, the East African nation says Britain has breached the terms of the “migration partnership” agreed in 2022. Under the controversial deal, London would pay Kigali to accept asylum seekers and immigrants who arrived in Britain illegally. Introduced by the Conservative government, current Prime Minister Keir Starmer scrapped the plan when he took office in 2024. Kigali says it…
By Rédaction Africanews with AFP Ethiopian police have arrested 22 people accused of smuggling nearly 2,000 migrants, in a network that reportedly caused at least two deaths and earned millions for those involved. Ethiopia is a key departure point for migrants heading to the Gulf and Europe and is known for human trafficking and scams. Authorities said the suspects ran “criminal gangs” and gave migrants false promises of a better life in Europe after crossing through Libya. Instead, migrants were held in warehouses, forced to contact their families for ransom, and effectively kept hostage until payment. The gang is believed…
