Nigerian engineering company Lee Engineering is building two compressor stations in Edo State for the Escravos–Lagos Pipeline System, according to a 22 October statement from the presidency. The stations are intended to increase pressure in the line and allow it to carry more gas.
The pipeline’s design capacity was expanded from 1.1 billion to 2.3 billion standard cubic feet a day, but the presidency says the compressor stations are needed before the system can operate at that higher level. The 2.3 billion figure is a target capacity, rather than a statement of current daily deliveries.
President Bola Tinubu discussed the project during a meeting with Lee Engineering chairman Leemon Ikpea in Abuja. The government expects stronger flows to support power plants and industry along the route and potentially increase supplies through the West African Gas Pipeline.
Tinubu also called for more work for capable Nigerian engineering firms. The presidency said some components are being made at Lee Engineering’s fabrication yard in Warri.
