The African Development Bank has approved a $503.75 million loan to Botswana to help cushion energy-price pressures and support reforms aimed at private-sector growth. The bank said the programme places particular emphasis on employment opportunities for women and young people.
The Economic Competitiveness and Transformation Support Program is intended to strengthen public finances, investment and support for small businesses. Its targets include raising private investment to 30% by 2028 and expanding the number of active micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.
The bank said short-term assistance includes supplementary payments for three months to older people and other vulnerable beneficiaries, with an estimated 279,000 people due to receive support. It also pointed to plans for renewable-energy procurement, broader electricity access and an expanded fuel depot.
These figures describe the loan approval and programme targets, not completed results. The bank said implementation will be supported by technical assistance and measured against specific reforms.
