The Obama Presidential Center: A Monument to Ego or Empowerment?

Barack Obama, the former president and now a celebrity multimillionaire, has yet to accomplish what most ex-presidents have already done at this point in their post-White House careers. It’s been almost eight years since he left office, and he still hasn’t published a completed memoir of his presidency. The first volume of A Promised Land (2020) was almost 800 pages long, but there’s no word yet on when the second volume will hit bookstores.

The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago is also far from completion. While it won’t be a traditional library like those of his predecessors, it aims to inspire and empower people to change their world. The center will be run by the Obama Foundation, a private nonprofit organization that plans to digitize and publish online all records related to Obama’s presidency instead of relying on taxpayer-funded National Archives and Records Administration.

The center will feature several amenities such as a museum, fitness center, playgrounds for children with disabilities, recording studio for young musicians from underprivileged communities, teaching kitchen for healthy eating classes for families in need; several gardens including one dedicated solely to Michelle Obama’s White House Kitchen Garden; and even a sledding hill. However impressive these features may sound individually or collectively as part of an urban park project that includes restoring nearby Jackson Park lagoon ecosystem while creating new jobs opportunities for local residents – some critics argue that they are nothing more than an ego-driven monument befitting its namesake.
