How has the resurfacing of the video from Pelosi’s interview with Bill Maher affected her response to criticism about her role in the January 6th insurrection?

On August 29, 2024, a viral video resurfaced that showed Speaker Pelosi seemingly blaming herself for the January 6th insurrection at the Capitol Building. The video was originally from a June 2022 interview with Bill Maher on HBO’s “Real Time.” In the video, Maher accuses Pelosi of not doing enough to protect the Capitol on January 6th, to which Pelosi responds: “Well, I do take responsibility for that. I mean, I’m the Speaker of the House.”

Pelosi addressed the resurfacing of the video during her weekly news conference on August 30th, where she rebutted Maher’s accusation and clarified her remarks from the 2022 interview. “Let me just say this about vaccines and masks,” Pelosi began, pivoting the conversation away from Maher’s accusation. “We need everyone to get vaccinated and wear masks, and we certainly need the people in this country to understand that if they don’t, they’re putting themselves at risk, their family, and everybody else.”

Pelosi then continued to address the criticism she has received for her handling of the January 6th insurrection, stating that she had done everything within her power to ensure the safety and security of the Capitol on that day. “We worked with the Capitol Police, the Metropolitan Police Department, the National Guard, the Department of Defense, and U.S. intelligence agencies,” Pelosi said. “We did everything we could in our power to protect the Capitol and those who serve here.”

Pelosi also pointed out that the House Committee investigating the January 6th insurrection is still ongoing, and that the committee’s findings will shed more light on the events of that day. “We owe it to the American people to get to the truth about what happened on January 6th,” she said. “And we will not rest until we have all the answers.”

while Speaker Pelosi did take responsibility for her role as Speaker during the January 6th insurrection in her 2022 interview with Maher, she has since stated that she and her colleagues did everything within their power to protect the Capitol and its occupants on that day. Additionally, Pelosi has shifted the conversation away from Maher’s accusation and towards the importance of vaccinations and masks in preventing the spread of COVID-19. As the House Committee investigating the insurrection continues its work, more information about the events of January 6th is sure to come to light. All rights reserved.
