Malaria vaccine price deal could save $50m and widen access

UNICEF and Gavi say a new agreement could reduce the price of the RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine by approximately 40%, potentially saving $50 million between 2027 and 2029. UNICEF said the new price would be €5.50 a dose.

The lower price is expected to take effect by early 2027, subject to regulatory and manufacturing milestones, including World Health Organization approval of a new production facility. UNICEF has not said the lower-price procurement has already begun.

The organisations estimate the savings could fund a full four-dose course for up to one million additional children, or help countries deliver other vaccines. UNICEF says it has procured and delivered more than 74 million malaria vaccine doses since rollout began in 2024.

Malaria vaccines are now part of routine immunisation in 25 African countries supported by Gavi, UNICEF says. Vaccination works alongside mosquito control, testing and treatment rather than replacing those measures.
