Lagos is celebrating the life and legacy of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti with a vibrant exhibition that features 440 items, including personal memorabilia, photographs, paintings, and videos of his performances. Visitors to the exhibition can explore Fela’s history, enjoy live renditions of his music by Nigerian artists, and purchase replicas of his iconic, colorful underwear.
The event marks the African debut of the show, which is three times larger than the original version developed by the Philharmonie de Paris. Notably, it incorporates legacy programming to highlight Fela’s activism, artistry, and enduring cultural influence.
Fela, who blended jazz, funk, and West African rhythms, became a symbol of resistance against political corruption and military rule in the 1970s. His impact continues to inspire Nigerian musicians and activists today.
